In the days of yesteryear famous women smoking graced us with their presences on film, billboards and in popular magazines. Even so, the idea of women smoking cigarettes was considered a disdainful behavior whether cigarettes were available for purchase or not. Knowing this, why are the women of today’s society still smoking if health risks exist for themselves and others?
Although many women enjoy smoking socially, they often ignore the dangers they face as women and as human beings. They may drink and smoke simultaneously in various social environments, such as a nightclub or at a bar. Because of the dangers that smoking causes to the women smoking and innocent bystanders receiving second-hand smoke, restaurants and other establishments alike have decided to prohibit smoking altogether. Women have been more likely to experience a continuing problem with smoking because of the stresses they encounter, such as work, motherhood and having to measure up to their spouse’s standards as a wife. Those who don’t manage stress well may seek a different outlet to cope with it and others take what life throws at them with ease. Quite a few of women who are smokers look forward to their cigarette breaks to “take a break” from the daily conundrums they encounter in life.
Another reason we may find women smoking more than men is to attempt maintain their weight, as well as to lose weight. Much of our modern society has placed a great deal of merit on the superiority of women who have and maintain a much more slender appearance. There seems to be some validity in the belief that smoking cigarettes suppress the appetite, since the nerve endings in our taste buds and nasal passages deaden over time in response to food.
Still there are many of us who may reach for another cigarette to attempt to get rid of feelings of emptiness and boredom. While most human beings are magnanimously known for being social creatures, there are some women who are shy and may seek relief from engaging in a conversation by reaching for a cigarette. Since quite a few of us have an aversion to cigarette smoke, smoking offers women some form of relief from social activities. Whatever the reasons have been for the number of women smoking, it is currently declining because of the awareness of gender-specific health risks.
