Most people dont spend much of time thinking of the well-being of our sinuses until something goes wrong and they get clogged. Clogged sinuses could be extremely painful and help to make an already miserable flu even harder to deal with. Most of us attempt to treat our sinus issues with medications or steam but the real truth is that the things we eat can also have a dramatic effect on those tiny passageways in our skulls. So how do you keep your sinuses healthy with food? Keep reading to determine what foods do or do not help your sinuses feel better.
If you start to have issues with your sinuses, you need to stay away from milk and other dairy products. Dairy products help to induce the creation of mucous and phlegm. This stuff will work its way from the rest of your body–your lungs and stomach directly into your sinuses and keep them from being able to drain properly. These sorts of blockages will help breed loads of different bacteria that will only help you stay sick. This can also be the reason dairy products must be avoided when you experience a chest coldthe phlegm builds up in your throat making your cough worse than it has to be.
There are some individuals who think that eating things like spicy foods (like wasabi, horseradish, etc) will be super helpful in clearing up sinus problems. While this can undoubtedly help thin out the mucous in your sinuses, it is also likely to give you a seriously runny nose and other, temporary, relief. If you have problems with troubles like acid reflux or heartburn, you should steer clear of spicy foods because, in some cases, the regurgitated stomach acid can work its way up into your throat and cross the barrier into your sinus membranes and cause some really bad problems for you.
Alcohol just isn’t beneficial to consume when you are having sinus issues. Alcohol has been proved to induce dehydration and dehydration can lead to the hardening of mucous and phlegm. This can make it nearly impossible for your sinuses to drain when you are sick so, even though some alcohol may help you sleep through your illness, it could also be prolonging it. Tea, though, can be enormously helpful. A mug of hot tea, while putting off the vapor that can help break up sinus clogs, has other healing properties that will help cure the illness, though it depends on what kind of tea you choose to drink.
Stay far from caffeine. You might be tempted to replace a cup of coffee for tea or hot water. Do not cave in to that temptation. Caffeine dehydrates your system exactly like alcohol does so that shows that when you drink (or eat) it, you will have a harder time healing your sinuses and the rest of your body too.
Obviously you’ll want to talk with your doctor about this because everybodys body reacts differently to things. What succeeds for your friend may not work for you so, if your sinus concerns are extended you need to talk to your doctor.
